Trails Coming Soon

We love building and maintaining trails in Leadville and Lake County. Check out what we are currently working on below. If you have any questions, comments, or recommendations, feel free to contact us.

Timberline Trail System- 2023 and Beyond

Since 2009 the Cloud City Wheelers have been working with Colorado Mountain College and Lake County to improve and maintain the Timberline Trail System. This year round trail system sees many visitors from High School racers participating in the Cloud City Challenge to Colorado Mountain College’s Cross Country Running team.

Working with CMC we will improve the year round usefulness of these trails while adding new downhill and uphill sections to this popular area.

Newmont Trail System

After 3 years of planning and negotiations, our area’s first public trails on private property are here. Working with Newmont and Lake County, The Cloud City Wheelers constructed 2 directional trails close to town. A directional uphill Bike Trail Yakety Yak (bidirectional for foot traffic) and a directional downhill trail Swamp Angel bring users from the Landfill Rd. up to the Swamp Angel site on the Mineral Belt Trail. These new trails provide new public access to land otherwise off limits to the public. These are the closest singletrack trails to the City of Leadville.

Turquoise Lake Trails

In 2017 we proposed creating new trails in the Turquoise Lake Recreation Area. These trails were designed to complement the existing uses of the area, while creating new opportunities for trail users. Beginning in 2020 The Wheelers along with the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps were able to build 6.5 Miles of mountain bike optimized trails. In 2021 The Wheelers, Rocky Mountain Youth Corps, and Volunteers for Outdoors Colorado completed 1.5 miles of trail to complete Phase 1 of the Turquoise Lake Trails. We are working with the US Forest Service- Leadville Ranger District on future exciting phases.
